World Day for Safety & Health at Work 2024
This year, Paul Kell, SHEQ Director, highlights the working at height systems, equipment, and training we have implemented across the Cleveland Group.
We have several tasks within our depot operations ranging from general repair and maintenance of our anti-vandal units and modular fleets to modifications and full conversions of storage containers.
After a thorough analysis of our operations, it was concluded that due to the size of our units and the increased repair and modification work required, our ‘Working At Height’ procedures needed to be updated.
Taking this into account, we focussed on identifying the working at height systems and equipment we could utilise that best suits our operational needs, giving us the best possible fall prevention protection to our operatives.
Some of this equipment included:
- The use of high ropes systems in our workshops that come within inertia reels and harnesses.
- A system called ‘container safe’ which can be used for outside works in our depots or on customers sites.
- The introduction of various height working platforms, removing the use of ladders other than for strict access and egress purposes only.
After identifying and implementing the equipment, we proceeded with practical training and toolbox talks for all applicable operatives to familiarise them with the gear. new processes. Additionally, we've introduced two mandatory online modules for depot staff for working at height and ladder safety.
Another is integrated into our own ‘Working At Height’ safety campaign - the RoSPA Fall Fighter framework which has been presented to all staff to ensure their safety at work and at home.
It’s been another successful year for Cleveland in terms of health and safety, as we have been awarded a RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) gold award for the second year running thanks to our efforts and achievements
