20ft high cube shipping container in a construction setting

Overview

A 20ft high cube shipping container offers an extra foot of vertical clearance compared to a standard 20ft, giving you more flexibility in the same footprint.

With 8ft 9in of internal height, it’s ideal for bulky equipment, tall stock, or racked storage that needs more usable vertical space.

The 20ft format works well on tighter sites, and the high cube height ensures there’s still plenty of room for walk-in access and basic internal fit-outs. From machinery storage to mobile workspaces, the 20ft high cube balances accessibility with extra volume. Built for heavy-duty performance, each unit includes a lock box, vents, marine plywood flooring, and multiple lashing points.

High cube containers are a popular base for conversions thanks to their increased headroom.

With Cleveland XTRAS, we can adapt your 20ft unit for tool storage, retail, workspace or office use, without sacrificing internal usability. All modifications are carried out in-house by our skilled conversion team and delivered ready to use.

FAQ

Yes. High cubes can be stacked with standard containers, but the difference in height (1ft) needs to be factored in during setup.

In many cases, no, especially for temporary storage use. But if the container is staying in place long-term or being used as a commercial unit (e.g. a shop, kitchen or office), planning permission may be required. We recommend checking with your local authority.

Both offer the same internal height (8ft 9in), but the 40ft version provides almost double the floor space. 20ft high cube containers are easier to manoeuvre and better for compact sites; 40ft high cube is ideal for volume-heavy loads or large-scale conversions.

Most sites don’t need to supply their own equipment. We’ll confirm delivery method and offloading options with you before finalising your order. If site access is restricted or non-standard, let us know, and our team can help plan a safe delivery.
